What Happens During Hip Replacement Surgery?

Once you’re anesthetized, you’ll be positioned on your side or back. The surgeon makes an incision and removes the head of your thigh bone (femur). He or she then:
-
Inserts the femoral stem and a new head
-
Prepares the cup-like part of your pelvic bone to receive the metal prosthetic cup
-
Places a liner between the new cup and the femoral head and then brings the thigh component in place with the hip component
The incision is closed and a dressing is applied.
