Managing Pain During Your Post-Op Hospital Stay

Some post-op pain is normal after joint replacement surgery and will improve with each passing day.

During your hospital stay, we‘ll first give you pain relief medicine through your IV and later orally, when you’re eating and drinking again.

We want you to be comfortable and able to do the physical therapy exercises that are key to moving better and returning to your normal life. Check out the video below to learn how we’ll help manage your pain.

Side Effects of Meds

Keep in mind that a common side effect of narcotic pain meds (and iron supplements, too) is constipation in the days and weeks after your surgery.

If you experience constipation post-surgery, stay hydrated and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. If the constipation is quite uncomfortable, let your surgeon know. Medication, such as a stool softener, may be needed to treat this.
