Putting In and Taking Out
Try This Toddler Favorite

Give your child a pot or box with 5–6 baby-safe items in it: wooden spoons, board books, small stuffed animals, balls, blocks, etc.

She’ll will take out each object 1 by 1, examining (and often tasting) each, before setting it aside and picking up the next. Then she’ll likely put them all back in the box—1 by 1—and take them out again.

“Putting in” and “taking out” are deeply satisfying actions for a toddler. This can also be done using toy containers with shapes and shape-like holes in them.

Your child will be practicing fine motor skills, exploring the qualities of interesting objects (Is it hard or soft? Rough or smooth? Does it make sound or not?) and the concepts of full and empty.
