Double Knee or Hip Replacement Surgery
|
| |
|
If you’re undergoing a double joint replacement due to damage to both of your knees or hips, you’ve likely been scheduled for 1 of 2 different surgical options:
|
| |
|
► Staged bilateral joint replacement involves 2 surgeries to allow recovery from the first knee or hip replacement before having the second one.
The 2 procedures might, for example, be done several months apart. Each surgery takes a couple of hours, with a post-op hospital stay of 1-3 days.
► Simultaneous bilateral joint replacement involves 1 surgery, with both knees or hips being operated on at that time. The advantages are just 1 hospital stay and 1 rehab period, though the rehab may be slower because both knees or hips are involved.
Surgery can take up to 4 hours, with a post-op hospital stay of up to 10 days.

There are risks associated with both options, including:
- Blood clots
- Infection
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Nerve damage
- A failing artificial joint
These risks, while uncommon, are greater for men and anyone over age 65.

Simultaneous bilateral joint replacement also requires more anesthesia, which carries its own risk for complications. This option is not recommended for people with heart conditions or lung disease because of the risk for heart problems or too much blood loss during and after the procedure.
If your surgeon has recommended the simultaneous procedure, it’s because you’re healthy enough to have it.
