Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  When will I be able to get in a shower and shampoo my hair?

A:  You will be able to take a shower (and shampoo your hair) by the third or fourth day after surgery. You need to be able to stand and be steady on your feet. Your nurse will tell you if you need to have a plastic drape over your incision.

You may not submerge your incision or incisional area into water—for example: bathtubs, pools, hot tubs, lakes or other bodies of water. Once your physician clears you to submerge your surgical area into water, you may begin submerging your incision and surrounding incisional area.

This is a great question to ask your doctor about at your follow-up appointments.
