Your Pre-Admission Screening

Your surgical team takes extra care to make sure you’re healthy enough for joint replacement surgery. This is done in a pre-admission screening appointment.
During this appointment, you’ll likely meet with several members of your care team, including a nurse practitioner/physician assistant and anesthesiologist.
The screening may include questions about your health, physical condition and lifestyle; your weight and BMI (body-mass index) in case you need to lose some weight before the procedure; and your living situation and whether you have someone at home who can help during your early recovery after surgery.

It’s important for your surgeon to know this health information in case you need additional medical care before your joint replacement or a complication occurs during or after your surgery.
You may also have certain diagnostic tests, as requested by your surgeon. These could include

Bring this paperwork to your screening appointment:

A copy of your advance directive or health care proxy

A list of allergies and how you react to each one

A signed copy of the permission for surgery, if your doctor provided one

A copy of your insurance card and photo identification

A list of medications you‘re currently taking, including the name, dosage, how often you take each medication, and the date and time of last dosage
