Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  What happens in the earliest weeks of pregnancy?

A:  Your baby is just an embryo right now. It attaches itself to the wall of your womb (uterus) and continues to grow. The embryo is surrounded by fluid inside the amniotic sac. The outer layer of this sac becomes the placenta, which takes over the transfer of nutrients from the mother to the embryo.

By week 6, your baby’s brain, heart, spinal cord and other organs have started to form. At this stage, the embryo looks a bit like a small tadpole.
