Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  I’ve heard conflicting information about taking Sudafed for nasal stuffiness. My midwife said I can take 1 at a time, but a nurse in a pregnancy class said that doctors discourage taking Sudafed because it can cause high blood pressure. Who is correct?

A:  There is some truth to both views. Expectant mothers who have had high blood pressure or hypertension prior to pregnancy are more likely to have higher blood pressure during pregnancy and should avoid decongestants such as Sudafed during pregnancy. These precautions are, in fact, typically printed on the side of the box of medication.

As is the case with all medications during pregnancy, do discuss this with your healthcare practitioner.
