Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  My 5-year-old son wants to know where the baby came from. How can I explain this to him, and what information is appropriate for a child his age?

A:  Many good books are available for young children that explain how conception occurs. It’s So Amazing!: A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies and Families (by Robie H. Harris, Candlewick Press, 1999) is a tried and true classic.

You know your child best, however, so you are best able to judge what sort of information he’s ready for. He may actually be more interested in how the baby develops month by month—and what life will be like once the baby is born—than facts about conception.

Let his questions be your guide, and answer them as directly and simply as possible. When he asks more questions, he’s telling you that he’s ready for more answers.
