Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  Are abdominal cramps normal early in pregnancy?

A:  Yes. Your uterus is growing and the ligaments around it are stretching, causing the aches and pains you feel at this point in your pregnancy. If the pain becomes severe, regular or prolonged, or is accompanied by vaginal bleeding, contact your healthcare provider.

Cramps can also occur later in pregnancy as your body continues to accommodate a growing fetus. And, of course, at the end of pregnancy, cramps may signify the beginning of labor.
