Q: My partner smokes. Will the secondhand smoke affect the baby?
A: In addition to raising your risk of miscarriage and your baby’s risk of premature birth, lower birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and learning problems, more recent studies have shown that secondhand smoke can affect fetal behavior in several ways, including increased heart rate.
Have your partner talk to a healthcare provider about ways to cut down and quit. If your partner doesn’t stop, try setting a rule that smoking occurs only outdoors—and away from you and the baby.
