Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  I’ve heard that my baby can hear sounds in the uterus now, so should I be careful about what noises I expose him or her to?

A:  While your developing baby cannot yet hear sounds the way you do, he likely experiences sound as vibration. In this way, loud noises can feel like strong vibrations and can even startle him. The noise of everyday life is normally fine for developing babies and helps to introduce them to the outside world. If, however, you live or work in an environment where loud noises are extreme and always present, let your healthcare provider know.
