Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  My doctor has offered me the quad screen. How effective is it at detecting problems?

A:  The quad screen is a blood test that allows doctors to look for evidence of an increased risk of Down syndrome and certain rare problems. “Increased risk” is not the same as having the condition and, in fact, even if the test suggests the possibility of a problem, there is often nothing wrong. The quad screen does, however, serve as a signal to your doctor that more tests may be appropriate—usually an ultrasound or amniocentesis—to rule out possible problems.

Your doctor will let you know if there is anything to be concerned about. Talk about the pros and cons of doing this test with your doctor or midwife.
