Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  I feel dizzy when I get up from a sitting position. Yesterday, I almost fainted when shopping. Is this a normal problem during pregnancy or is this something harmful to my baby?

A:  Dizziness is a frequent complaint during pregnancy. It can be related to the blood supply needed for baby’s rapidly growing circulatory system, or it can be caused as the uterus expands and puts pressure on the blood vessels.

To prevent dizziness when you rise quickly from a sitting position, stand up slowly. You may also feel dizzy because of low blood sugar if you wait too long to eat between meals or if you are in a closed, overheated area.

Fainting is less common. If you have fainted, do contact your healthcare provider and describe the incident in detail, what you were doing at the time and how long it lasted. Fainting is a symptom of conditions affecting you and your baby that your careprovider would be concerned about.
