Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  When is a baby able to digest solid foods?

A:  A newborn’s digestive tract is immature and cannot digest anything but breast milk or infant formula.

Babies aren’t ready for solid foods until they are 4–6 months old. Opinions are mixed, however, about whether to start a baby on solid foods as early as 4 months (though never before then). Talk with your baby’s healthcare provider about the right time for your baby.

Readiness signs include your baby showing a clear interest in trying new foods. Pushing anything fed to him or her out with the tongue is a sign that your baby is not ready.
