Q: I’ve gained so much weight! Does that mean my baby will be bigger than average? Can a baby be too large to deliver naturally?
A: There has been some association with a larger weight gain in the mother and a large baby, but that isn’t always the case. A 35- to 40-pound weight gain usually produces a 6- to 7-pound baby. A larger baby does not mean you can’t have a vaginal delivery.
The deciding factor, barring other complications, will be if the baby’s head can fit through your pelvis. If the baby’s head descends and the cervix dilates at a normal rate, the labor can proceed. If the labor does not progress, medication may be offered to help move it along. If progress stops, a cesarean delivery will be considered.
