Frequently Asked Questions About Pregnancy

Q:  I read something about the emotional state of the mother being transferred to the baby via stress hormones. If the mom is anxious or agitated, does that make the baby upset? Does a constantly anxious or stressed mother potentially lead to a colicky baby?

A:  Stress hormones such as adrenaline do cross the placenta and reach your baby. Stress is universal, and everyone experiences it. Under normal circumstances, it will not affect the baby.

High levels or prolonged stress, however, are not good for any of us. Reduce your stress by using relaxation techniques, deep breathing, quiet time, exercise or whatever works for you.

Get plenty of rest and avoid a lot of sugar and caffeine, which increase the effects of stress. Exercise, with your healthcare provider’s approval, will increase your sense of well-being and help alleviate stress.
