Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  What is MRSA, and why should I be concerned about it?

A:  MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is a staph infection that is resistant to the antibiotics designed to treat it. About 2 in 100 people carry MRSA in their nose, though most do not develop serious infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

MRSA infections can be acquired in healthcare facilities, including hospitals and outpatient centers. You will likely be checked for MRSA during pre-admission screening, and if positive you’ll be treated for it before your procedure.
