Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  How should I prepare my home for my recovery period after joint surgery?

A:  We generally don’t recommend that you move your bedroom to the first floor if it’s on a higher floor. Climbing stairs is good exercise after this surgery, as long as the stairs are safe and have a handrail. (If you don’t have a handrail, now is a good time to have one installed.)

Certain equipment will be helpful (and may even be provided) to ensure your safety during recovery, including a shower bench or chair and grab bars, a raised toilet seat and other items.
