Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  What is a "knee immobilizer" and how long will I need to wear it?

A:  A knee immobilizer is a soft brace that wraps around your knee and keeps your leg straight. It is used when walking until you are able to independently perform a straight leg raise.

Typically, you will wear it when out of bed with physical therapy for a couple of days after surgery. Your surgeon may want you to sleep in it for a week or so after surgery to keep you from bending your knee.
