Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  What kind of range of motion can I expect in my knee?

A:  Most people need:

  • 70 degrees to walk on level ground

  • 90 degrees to climb stairs

  • 100 degrees to climb down stairs

  • 105 degrees to get out of a low chair

How long it takes to get back to those ranges varies from person to person. After a year, you may have up to 125 degrees of flexion, but 105–110 degrees is usually satisfactory.
