Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q.  When will I be able to begin to use weights when I exercise?

A.  Most likely you will not use weights in your physical therapy program for the first 2 months post-op. (You may, however, have been advised to use weights to strengthen your arms.)

As you make progress, your physical therapist may recommend that you begin to use them. Use only light weights, starting with 1 pound and progressing to a maximum of 5 pounds.
