Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  When will I be able to travel by airplane and will flying increase my risk of getting a blood clot?

A:  You can fly as soon as you are well enough to travel. When you fly during the first few months after surgery, you should:

  • Get a seat with as much leg room as possible; preferably an aisle seat.

  • Get up and walk every 45–60 minutes.

  • Do your ankle pumps frequently.

  • Be well hydrated.

  • Wear your post-op stockings.

By 3 months after surgery, your risk of getting a blood clot is the same as anyone who has not had surgery.
