Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  Will I set off the metal detector when I go through security at the airport?

A:  You may set off the alarms at airport security gates depending on the type of Implant you have and the sensitivity of the scanning equipment. The body scanning equipment decreases the likelihood of “setting off the machines” and also decreases the time needed to get through the security gate.

In general, it's a good idea to plan for it to take a bit longer to get through airport security and be prepared for a secondary screening, including being “wanded,” if the alarms do sound. Unfortunately, a wallet card or letter from your doctor is no longer sufficient due to increased security measures.
