Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  How long will I need to take iron and vitamin C supplements after surgery?

A:  If your blood count was low when you left the hospital, your surgeon may have instructed you to take iron. If so, 4 weeks of iron after surgery is usually enough. Iron supplements help your body replenish its iron supply and build up your blood count.

Some patients are instructed to take vitamin C after surgery. Your body needs vitamin C to form collagen, which your body needs to make skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. You also need vitamin C for healing. Adult men need 90 mg a day; adult women 75 mg. If you are taking a supplement to ensure that you meet the requirement, do so for four weeks. Do not take more than you need, as this can accentuate the scar tissue.

Always be sure to get the daily requirement of vitamin C, whether from a balanced diet or from supplements. Because your body doesn't store vitamin C, you need it every day.
