Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  When will I be able to bear full weight on my hip or knee?

A:  While recommendations vary from surgeon to surgeon, generally you can bear full weight as soon as you are comfortable and have regained adequate muscle strength. This could be as early as the day after surgery. Some surgeons may want you to bear partial weight for a few weeks after your surgery. Your physical therapist will advise you on this.
