A: Most people are able to go directly home after their knee or hip replacement. However, some people may need to go to a rehab facility in order to gain the skills needed to be safe at home. Many factors are considered in this decision. These include:
-
post-operative functional status, as evaluated by your physical therapist in the hospital, and an overall evaluation by your hospital team
-
the availability of family or friends to assist you with daily activities
-
your home environment
- other safety considerations
If your surgeon thinks you need to go to an inpatient rehab (a transitional or sub-acute care) facility, the decision of where you go will depend on your needs. It may also depend on which facility has a bed available. Your insurance company may influence the decision as well.
Find out about your options in advance and discuss them with your case manager. Think about what is the best location—near your home, near the hospital or near your family members. While you may not get your first choice, it’s a good idea to be prepared with options so you can make your preferences known.
