Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  When will I be able to eat after surgery?

A:  After surgery, you can have ice chips to help with nausea from the anesthesia. After a few hours, you can have sips of water or clear fluids. You can have a more substantial meal after your bowel is awake, usually the day after surgery.

The medical staff will know if your bowel is awake by listening to your belly with a stethoscope. When they hear “bowel sounds,” you can eat, because your body will be ready to digest food. When you are ready to eat, each room has a room service menu from which you can order. Be aware that you may have dietary restrictions after your surgery.
