Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  What should I do if I get constipated?

A:  It is very common to have post-op constipation. This may be due to a variety of factors, but is especially common when taking narcotic pain medicine. A simple over-the-counter stool softener (such as Colace) can help to prevent this problem.

Other things you can do to avoid constipation are:

  • Increase your fluid intake.

  • Increase fiber in your diet.

  • Increase the amount of walking you do (as tolerated).

If you do get constipated, talk with your pharmacist about a mild laxative such as Docusate or Senokot.
