Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  I am not obese, but I think I am carrying a few extra pounds. How do I know what is a desirable weight? I want to be in the best shape possible for my surgery?

A:  Use the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Body Mass Index Calculator to determine if you are at a healthy weight for your height. Enter your height and weight in the boxes provided, and click Compute BMI. Your BMI will appear in the box below, and the calculator will let you know if you are at a desirable weight, underweight, overweight enough to be a greater risk for health problems, or obese.
