A: This is a very common complaint following hip and knee replacement surgery. Non-prescription remedies such as Benadryl or melatonin may be effective, if you can tolerate them.
Other things that may help:
-
Be activated as tolerated
-
Avoiding napping during the day
- Resist the temptation to get into bed until you are tired—then read or listen to music (but avoid TV news) before you go to sleep and perhaps have an herbal (no caffeine) tea.
Usually by 4–6 weeks after your surgery, your pain has decreased and you are more comfortable and able to sleep. If the insomnia continues, consult your primary care provider; medication may be prescribed for you.
