Total Joint Replacement FAQs

Common Questions Orthopedic Surgeons Hear from Joint Patients

Q:  What equipment will I need?

A:  Your occupational therapist will determine which assistive devices you need after your surgery. You will go home with a walker, crutches or a cane. Your physical therapist will work with you on this.

Other equipment might include an elevated toilet seat, a shower bench, a “grabber” to help pick up things on the floor, a “sock aid” to help you put on your postoperative stockings, a dressing stick, a bathing sponge and elastic shoe laces. Your occupational therapist will work with you on this.

One walking device is usually covered by insurance. Other devices may not be covered, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider before you come to the hospital.
